HAPPY ST PATRICK’S DAY

IN SEARCH OF LEPRECHAUNS

In a deep sleep, snuggled under the duvet cuddled to Taff, I felt something pounce on the bed, then a wet nose touch mine, before feeling a soft furry head bonk.

“Meeeeeoooooooow.”

It was Nancy Jones, our fluffball of a pussycat.  I smiled and returned her affection with lots of kisses and strokings.

“Happy Saint Patrick’s Day mummy,” said Nancy in a whisper.

“Happy Saint Patrick’s Day to you too,” I replied with a smile.

That’s why she’d woken me up early.  It was Saint Patrick’s day (St Patrick the patron saint of Ireland) and I’d made her a promise.  As a Jones we always kept our promises, as a ‘promise made is a debt unpaid’.  Today we were going in search of leprechauns.

Taff had planned to continue writing his book in peace and quiet while us girls went out for  the day; so I decided to let him sleep in, snoring his head off.

Having brushed my teeth and showered I donned the day’s uniform – black leggings and matching long sleeved t-shirt, with hair tied back.  The attire was the agreed ‘ninja’ colouring, not only to coordinate with Nancy but to endeavour to remain undetected, as we’d heard leprechauns were particularly tricky to catch.

As Nancy munched on cat food and biscuits noisily, I grabbed a cup of tea and a couple of bananas.  There was no time for anything extravagant.  Sitting quietly, listening to the blackbirds singing I read the literature Nancy had printed off the internet during the night whilst I’d been asleep.

I didn’t know much about leprechauns, I must admit; and although Nancy had done a stirling job with her research, we had very little to go on.  I made a mental note of the pertinent points.  Leprechauns are old, small and mainly wear green – green hat, green coat, green trousers – to set off their gorgeous red hair and beards, with nice shiny buckles on their hat and shoes.  As their name suggests, leprechaun or leath bhrogan means shoemaker, so they spend most of their time making shoes, aside from guarding their pot of gold, hidden at the end of a rainbow.  They also love practical jokes and getting intoxicated on their home-brewed poteen.  Strangely, only male leprechauns have ever been spotted in Ireland and rarely are they ever caught.  Yet, if caught, the leprechaun has the magical power to grant three wishes.

I got my thinking cap on.  This was going to be harder than I’d first thought.  We were hunting on a budget, so flying to Ireland was out of the question.  And although leprechauns were unheard of in England, the concept was not an impossibility as we had many magical rainbows throughout the year.

I jotted down our skills.  Nancy was renowned for being intelligent; and having read Taff’s volume of books (Tales of Nancy Jones) I knew that she could speak to gnomes.  Now I know gnomes are different to leprechauns, but I figured Nancy’s skills were transferrable.  I, not so intelligent, had searched and hunted down over 60 trees in the UK with Taff, with only a picture and brief location to go on.  So my map reading skills and determination were useful attributes also.  But we needed someone else, another strong minded female who could solve crimes, as the power of three (as seen on TV programmes like Charlie’s Angels or Charmed) I believed would be the key to our success.  I picked up the phone and dialled.

“Hello, Emma Curtis speaking.”

Taff had spent a lot of time with Emma writing down her adventures in The Emma Curtis Trilogy, so she was a good friend of the family and I knew she had the skills we needed for our quest.

I managed to persuade Emma that here pyjama veg-out day could be postponed for a few hours, so she agreed to give us two hours of her time.  Great on one hand, as we now had ‘the power of three’ but not so great as we only had two hours to find a leprechaun.

At 10am on the dot, we all met up at the rendezvous, a local café that sold home-made cakes and hot chocolate topped with cream and dark chocolate drops.

Although, in theory, animals weren’t allowed in the café, having put a high visibility coat on Nancy together with a dog lead , I explained to the owner that she was a ‘cat for the blind’ and we were training her.  The owner of the café looked a little surprised, but when she saw that Emma was wearing dark glasses (they were actually sunglasses), the woman believed our story.  I hate lying, but surmised that this was just a fib, as our cause was great, for if we did catch a leprechaun and have our three wishes we could end the world’s poverty, end all wars and all live in harmony.

I sat across the table from Nancy and Emma while we got our heads together.  Pulling out the laptop, I looked at the weather forecast… sun and blue skies all day.  “Drat, no rainbows,” I thought.  I then googled ‘shoemakers’ but none existed in the city, only ‘shoe repairers’.  Emma then thought of a good suggestion,

“What about hairdressers?”

Eventually I twigged what she was talking about.  As leprechauns always want to look their best, particularly on St Patrick’s day, being aged they’d obviously want to touch up their grey hairs with ginger dye.  We then realised however that if they did attend a hairdresser they’d be easily caught and so instead would have already purchased their no ammonia, bright red, home application dye, in disguise, from the local supermarket or chemist.

Traipsing round all the Portsmouth pubs was also a no go, if we were to catch a leprechaun celebrating, as leprechauns made home brew they didn’t need to go to a local inn, they had plenty of spirit at home to entertain themselves.

We ordered two more hot chocolates for Emma and me, and a milk for Nancy, plus another two slices of banoffee pie for the humans.

The two hours whizzed by.  With only five minutes to go before noon, our deadline, I heard a cry which made me jump.

“Meeeeoooow,” said Nancy.  “What about the local Irish club?  Prrrrrr.”

“By jove you’re a genius,”  I said, gobbling down the last piece of pie.

It took us only a minute to walk down to the club.  Normally we wouldn’t have been let in, as we weren’t Irish, or direct descendents from Ireland, however as the doorman recognised the famous Emma Curtis, they allowed the three of us in.

I looked left, Emma looked right and Nancy straight on, as we climbed the steps into the revelling crowd of green, celebrating not only St Patrick’s Day but also winning the Rugby Six Nations Championship.

At the strike of twelve, by the time we’d arrived at the bar, it was too late, he’d gone.  All that was left was an extra tall bar-stool, an empty pint of Guinness and one small silver shilling accompanied by a larger gold coin, both covered in magic leprechaun dust.

Happy Saint Patrick's Day everyone! :)

THE NEW ME... RECHARGING THE BATTERIES (DAY 48) - A gluten free, natural sugars, less alcohol diet

Breakfast

Yesterday we recharged our batteries and had the day off, yet the day seemed to whiz by quicker than normal.

Finished off tidying the lounge, read some newspapers and magazines, then we went out for a couple of hours looking at some pre-loved charity shops for inspiration and ideas. Came back and I did some patchworking whilst Taff (better half) did some crosswords - bubblegum for the brain.  Whilst he went to a meeting in the evening, I did some savoury cooking to use up the mountain of vegetables we'd accumulated.

Really feel more relaxed as all work and no play makes Pam and Taff dull people! :)

Back to the grindstone today.  I've got a list as long as my arm.  Should go to the gym really but know I probably won't.  We shall see.

THE NEW ME... DRAINED (DAY 47) - A gluten free, natural sugars, less alcohol diet

Chicken tikkad escalope

Busy day again yesterday.  Felt absolutely shattered.

Don't know where the hours went yesterday.  Tidied the house, put some washing on, hung it up, did some shopping with Taff, and made a cake, the day was gone.  I did go back to bed a couple of times as I was absolutely shattered and drained and felt crook (time of the month).

Taff did the ironing (such a star) whilst watching the rugby.  When I eventually got to chilling out, I watched half an hour of a German film called 'Barbara' before a neighbour-friend popped in for some wine and a chat.  It was great to see her and to listen to all her adventures in Poland.  She even brought us back a gnome cake mould! :) Actually it's a dwarf really from Wroclaw, Western Poland, but it looks like a gnome, so a gnome it shall be.

I love gnomes.  Every summer, for the past 3 years, I've run a free gnome fostering and adoption service. Gnomes appear on our doorstep, often with a rhyme, requesting a makeover.  Sometimes they need a new home; other times they're just looking to be fostered until they have a new set of clothes.  They then go back with a rhyme.

Nancy our pussycat loves gnomes too.  As part of 'Tales of Nancy Jones' Taff has written a story called 'Nancy and the Gnomes'.  I was even, coincidently, a gnome in the Brownies when I was a child.

When the weather gets warmer, I shall start my backlog of gnomes and other garden ornaments again.

It was lovely to sit out on the step yesterday as a family, in the sun.  Still a tad chilly though.

Taff made this amazing escalope which he'd tikkad - grilled in a curried yoghurt.  The amazing thing about this tikka version is that I only end up eating just 1 chicken breast instead of 2, like with our traditional chicken tikka.

What I ate yesterday (Day 46)

Snack
1 glass milk
1 mug tea + honey

Breakfast
Oats, 1 banana, Brazil nuts, sultanas, milk
1 glass milk

Lunch
Tuna salad - tuna in curried yoghurt on a bet of lettuce, cucumber, cherry tomatoes in an olive oil
red wine vinegar dressing + apple
1 glass water

Snack
Homemade gluten free cake

Dinner
Chicken tikkad escalope with lettuce, lemon + cucumber, red pepper and cherry tomatoes in an olive oil red wine vinegar dressing
1 glass water
Elderflower pressee + wine

THE NEW ME.... GOOD OLE FISH & CHIPS (DAY 46) - A gluten free, natural sugars, less alcohol diet

Cheeky seagulls in Portsmouth

Yet another super busy day in the Jones household.

Yesterday was a day of spring cleaning.  This time weeding the lever arch files of unwanted paperwork and having a good ole clean.  Usually I'd do one file at a time and perhaps spread it over a few days/weeks.  However, this time I did pretty much all of it in one go (just have one file to do), purely because they were annoying me.  After several hours I was done.

As it was a lovely day and we fancied some fresh air we went for a late lunch on The Hard, adjacent to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.  We shared fish, chips and curry sauce overlooking the water, Gosport and the famous HMS Warrior (the first iron-plated iron-hulled warship).  OK, so the batter wasn't gluten free, but it was lovely and light and we didn't eat it all as we game some to the seagulls.

Although chilly, it was so nice to be out in the sunshine, dry, instead of the usual rain that we've had over the past few months.

Returned home for Taff (better half) to watch the rugby while I watched a film on ITV iPlayer starring Minnie Driver, whilst doing some knitting.

Went to bed early but woke up super early so watched Diners, Drive-ins and Dives on TV with Taff, whilst I did a mountain of filing.

Returned to bed and had a lay in.

Have agreed with Taff that I'll add the honey to my mug of tea from now on - Taff makes better tea than me.  Taff doesn't do honey.

What I ate yesterday (Day5 45)

Snack
1 glass water
1 mug tea + honey
2 piece coconut flour cake

Breakfast
2 slices smoked bacon
2 scrambled eggs
Mushrooms - poached in butter
Cherry tomatoes - poached in coconut oil
1 mug tea + sugar
1 glass water

Lunch
Fish, chips & curry sauce
1/2 bottle water

Dinner
Chicken escalope in a cream sauce
2 potato cakes in coconut oil
Grape, cucumber & cherry tomato salad in olive oil and red wine vinegar
1 glass water
Elderflower pressee + wine

Must catch up on some patchwork today.

Have a great day all:)

THE NEW ME.... TIME FOR A SPRING CLEAN (DAY 45) - A gluten free, natural sugars, less alcohol diet

Squeaky bubble

Woke up to music on my music memory scratchpad.  A good sign, that means spring has sprung.

Had a usual hectic day yesterday doing paperwork and spring cleaning (which could take a few weeks) in between practicing with Nancy for Jelly Belly Friday!

Went to a client's yesterday afternoon, cleaning and organising, moving the project forward with the aim to reduce stress for said client.

Didn't really eat much yesterday as ran out of time. Did drink a few mugs of tea. Unfortunately Taff (better half) keeps adding sugar instead of honey.  Will have to move the sugar somewhere else.  I wonder if that's why I've got ulcers on my tongue?!?!

What I ate yesterday (Day 44)

Snack
1 glass milk
1 glass water
1 mug tea + honey

Breakfast
Squeaky bubble - fried mashed potato (in coconut oil) with spring onion, smoked bacon, lettuce
1 glass water

Lunch
2 mugs tea + sugar
1 glass water
4 slices coconut flour cake

Dinner
Chicken escalope in a cream sauce
Fried potatoes + tomato sauce
Salad - cucumber, cherry tomatoes in red wine vinegar, olive oil & seasoning plus apple
1 glass water
Elderflower pressee + wine

THE NEW ME... A LIFE OF ADVENTURE (DAY 44) - A gluten free, natural sugars, less alcohol diet

Coconut flour cake

As most of the bank statements had arrived in the post, yesterday was month end in the accounting world of the Jones'.

Started early which meant I still had some daylight left to clear my head and go to the bank and do a bit of health-food shopping.

Much that I'm a qualified accountant and done it full-time (in the past), doing accounts is never as exciting as our new lives now.  I'm now outside the box, having many varied, sometimes unrelated, projects running along at the same time, and able to used not only my business skills but creativity as well.  The latter I find exciting.  Being self-employed also means that I can start work early in the morning when no-one else is up, and get most of the bulk done by lunchtime.  I'm also able to spend more time with Taff (better half), even if we are in different rooms most of the time.... and of course keep fluffball Nancy amused.

Talking about Nancy (who's rubbing her head on my foot whilst sitting on the filing, as we speak), her story was in 'Chat' magazine yesterday.  She really is becoming a superstar.   She and her story have been in the local 'News' newspaper, the 'Daily Mail' online, 'BBC Radio Solent', 'Cat of the Day 1 March 2014' and now 'Chat'.  Luckily the stardom is not going to her head.

Have received some positive responses about Taff's book, 'Tales of Nancy Jones'.  We (I, Taff & Nancy) are so pleased that they are doing well as it means, as a result of the sale of every book, an amount goes to the RSPCA Stubbington Ark 'Paws 4 Help' appeal http://www.paws4help.org.uk/ to help raise money for a new cattery for the lovely felines currently housed awaiting a home.

Still on the diet.  Experimented with almond flour (ground almonds yesterday) which was a disaster.  Did make some coconut flour cake though which was a success.  Yum.  I think I'll have a piece in a moment! :)

What I ate yesterday (Day 43)

Snack
1 glass milk
1 mug tea

Breakfast
Oats, banana, apricot, Brazil nuts, milk
1 glass milk

Lunch
1 glass water
4 tsp homemade chilli

Snack
5 almond flour cake-balls
1 glass water

Dinner
Chicken escalope in a white cream sauce
Coleslaw - carrot, lettuce, onion in Greek style yoghurt & dash of salad cream
Rice + grapes
1 glass water
Elderflower pressee & wine

Happy Friday:)

THE NEW ME.. . SPRING CLEAN (DAY 43) - A gluten free, natural sugars, less alcohol diet

Homemade chicken curry

Planned on going to the cinema yesterday as it was 2 for 1 Orange Wednesday.  Alas, ran out of time.

Worked until late morning.  Then, as it was a sunny day, Taff (better half) and I decided to revamp the shed and install a large shelf to put all our bits and bobs on and create some more surface area.  I was Taff's assistant.  Six hours later we were done.  The wood we'd got cut from B&Q fit like a glove.  The 'new look' also gave us a chance to declutter and get rid of anything we didn't need.  In fact we've got a car-boot full of stuff to go to the recycling centre.  So yesterday was a real spring clean.

Our friend, who we gave the pancakes to as a surprise the previous day, popped round for a bite to eat and giggle.  He loved the pancakes and was well chuffed.  He'd never had savoury ones before, so thought the cheese and chilli pancakes were a nice change.

Accounts day today :(  Then I should be able to start weeding some lever-arch files over the next few days.

Mouthful of ulcers yesterday.  Don't feel run down so must be lacking something in my diet.  Will try to eat more fruit and drink less alcohol.

What I ate yesterday (Day 42)

Snack
1 glass milk
Homemade chicken curry
1 slice turkey & yoghurt
1 banana

Brunch
1 mug tea + honey
1 glass water
Chicken curry + lightly fried celery, courgette, mushrooms, spring onion

Dinner
Some-a dinner (some of this and some of that) - Sliced beef, turkey, fried potatoes, tomato sauce, olives, cucumber, pickled beetroot, cherry tomatoes, sausage
1 glass water
Wine & lemonade (ran out of elderflower pressee)
4 dried apricots
